
Georgraphy :
Maldives has 1190 islands, the archipelago
being situated at the trip of South India and west of Sri Lanka. Each island is, on an average, less than
half a square kilometre in area. The capital Male' island, is approximately 2 square kilometers and is a
few minute's boat ride from Male' International Airport. Male' is the seat of Government and the center
for commercial and business activities.
The length of the
archipelago is about 820 km and width 130 km. The land surface area of all islands is 297.8
square kilometer. The exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Maldives covers an area of 1,000,000
square kilometerss.
Climate/ when to visit :
From November to April is the peak tourist season as it concides
mainly with calm seas, with light breezes rain-free days, lots of sunshine and less cloud.
From May to October, many resorts offer off-season prices and even better prices in the June
and July period as the weather can become unpredictable on some days,with choppyseas,rain and
strong breeze,making travelling uncomfortable. Mean annual temperature is 30 degrees Celsius and
relative humidity approximately 80%.
Entry formalities :
There is no requirement
to obtain a visa in advance as vistors recieve a 30-day on arrival. A valid passport, and in some cases,
health documents are required.
Currency :
The local currency
is Rufiyaa (RF) and the US$ is widely accepted. The exchange rate is US$= Rufuyaa 12.85, Sterling
pound: RF 19.85, Euro: Rf 14.06. Resorts accept major credit cards.
What clothes to bring :
Light, summer or
tropical cotton and linen wear. Lots of t-shirts, beachwear, light skirts, slacks and shorts.
It is usual to dress up for dinner, although formalwear is not the norm. Trendy sportswear and
leisurewear are often seen. Nudity is forbidden and when visiting Male' you are expected to dress
neatly; skirts and shorts that are not too short and blouses with sleeves are expected. Casual
shoes and sandals are easy to walk in as the sand is soft.
Customs :
Strict laws prohibit the import
of pornographic materials, weapons, and drugs, into the country, and the penalties are severe. Alcohol cannot be imported without
a license. It should be declared at the customs and will be returned to you on departure.
The export of coral, shells, and other objects removed from their marine habitat is prohibited
in the Maldives. Please assist us in preserving our environment by taking only photographs and
memories with you while leaving only footprints.
